A 21-year-old man fled Walmart, leaving 136 stolen packs of gaming cards in a shopping cart behind him. Walmart officials alerted the Covington Police Department.

A life-changing experience

The Salvation Army has had a busy start to its summer in Newton County, kicking things off with an event at Camp Grandview in Jasper. The Salvation Army sponsored 18 children from Newton County to attend the camp for children, adults and seniors. Camp Grandview gives life-changing experience to its campers. They enjoy fresh mountain air, exercise and character-based programs, and make new friends that last a lifetime.

Mecca: The lucky ones

A 1959 movie 'Pork Chop Hill' starring Gregory Peck depicted the costly 1953 battle for a rocky hill during the last year of the Korean War. Pork Chop Hill had, in fact, snuffed out numerous lives before 1953. This is the story of one survivor, born and raised in Rockdale County.

City post office holds appreciation luncheon

Special delivery: On Nov. 5 Covington Post Master Shane Williams hosted an appreciation luncheon to present post office employees, past employees and surviving spouses of retired employees as well as veterans young and old. Covington Mayor Pro-Tem Hawnethia Williams shared her memories of past postal employees. Jackie B. Smith, clerk for Newton County Board of Commissioners, issued a proclamation from the BOC on behalf of all the retired postal workers and their families. The Rev. Hezekiah Benton of Bethlehem Baptist Church shared his thoughts America's veterans and gave thanks over the meal and for the postal employees.

Toy soldiers: The Newton High School Marine Corps JROTC program is once again conducting the Toys for Tots Drive in support of the nationwide Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. The JROTC also marched in Saturday's downtown Christmas parade.
