The Covington Rotary Club will host its 19th annual Cars of the Past car show Sunday on the square. The event highlighted 300 antique cars last year and drew in several thousand visitors. Proceeds from the event will assist the Rotary with civic projects, including the Empty Stocking Fund at Christmas. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Only a handful of residents attended Thursday night's T-SPLOST open house at Georgia Perimeter College despite the fact the additional penny tax will totally revamp transportation funding in the state and will greatly affect major regional thoroughfares.
Twenty-five World War II veterans, including several from Newton County, and their guardians flew to Washington, D.C. from Atlanta on Thursday in the inaugural flight of Honor Flight Conyers. The group left the American Legion Post 77 at 5 a.m., escorted by police, and spent the day in Washington D.C. visiting monuments and memorials such as the World War II memorial. The veterans, who came from across the metro Atlanta region and the state and ranged from ages 84 - 97, returned at 11:30 p.m travel-weary but proud.
