4H Forever: State 4H Congress

Newton County 4-H member Flannery Peay (on right) represented Northwest District at State 4-H Congress this week at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta. She competed in Performing Arts Instrumental, one of the largest projects in the state, and finished in fourth place. As part of the competition, Peay completed a year's portfolio work including performing arts work, leadership and service, then also arranged her own four-minute old-time fiddle piece. She was accompanied by County Extension Agent Terri Fullerton.

One tank trip: Sleeping bear, hidden alligator

Bear Hollow Zoo in Athens, Georgia has something for everyone. A short drive from Newton and Rockdale counties, this zoo offers a wide variety of wild animals. Here you can find a owls, bears, an American bald eagle and a reptile house with a variety of snakes and alligators. Volunteers educated on each of the animals are on hand to answer questions and offer a hands-on visit with some of the wildlife. The Bear Hollow Zoo is free for all visitors. Friends of the Library sponsor gift tree fundraiser

The Friends of the Newton County Library are sponsoring a Gift Tree just inside the lobby at the Newton County Library. The tree is decorated with colorful paper ornaments each listing a type of book or audio visual item with the amount it takes to purchase the item. Anyone can donate the suggested amount to the library to purchase a title in their name or to honor someone. Last season, Newton County Residents donated over $1,300 to purchase 70 books, paperbacks and DVDs for the Children's Room and general collections at the library.

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. Each Friday The Covington News will publish a list of individuals, businesses and civic groups who have donated to the cause that week as well as the total amount raised. Christmas Tree Association awarded grant

Making way for a new tree crop: The Georgia Christmas Tree Association was recently awarded a $30,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The grant money was allocated to the state as part of the 2008 U.S. Farm Bill. The purpose of the grant is to promote specialty crops in Georgia. Chuck Berry, president-elect of the GCTA and owner of Berry's Tree Farm in Covington, applied for and accepted the grant on behalf of the GCTA.
