Trespasser cuts off tops of flowers

When Covington police arrived at the scene of a trespassing call, Kelly Smith told the officer that an unknown person had cut the tops out of several of her petunias.

The petunias were planted under her bedroom window. The damage was valued at approximate $10. Smith requested an extra patrol in the area.

Man walks home after striking school bus

Newton County deputies arrived at the Riverside Mobile Home Park in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus. The school bus driver, told the deputies that a white station wagon had backed into the passenger side of the bus while children were getting off of the bus near the front of the park.

Regional banks collect more than six tons of peanut butter and jelly to benefit locals

Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta, divisions of Synovus Bank, collected 8,782 jars of peanut butter, 12,227 pounds worth, enough to make 97,818 sandwiches.

The fifth annual "Spread the Love" peanut butter and jelly food drive will benefit 37 food pantries in the banks' local communities.

Apollo Staffing hosts fundraiser to benefit Wounded Warrior Project

Local staffing company Apollo Staffing is beginning a company-wide fundraiser to assist the Wounded Warrior Project.

Beginning on Memorial Day and continuing for 30 days, Apollo will be donating $1 to the Wounded Warrior Project for every new like their "Facebook" site receives, and selling T-shirts for $10 a piece, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Benton House crowns new queen

Benton House of Covington assisted living has a special community tradition that gives senior residents the opportunity to sparkle, smile and shine in the spotlight. Saturday, May 19 marked the third annual Ms. Benton House pageant at the assisted living community that is home to around sixty seniors in Covington. Director of Activities Betty Britt coordinated this event. Britt said seven lovely seniors all over the age of seventy-five answered questions from three local judges on topics like the best advice for young mothers and the contestants modeled sparkly gowns. Lassiter: 4 stars for Alice in Wonderland

The Arts Association-Newton County presented Covington Regional Ballet's "Alice in Wonderland" at the Olive Swann Porter Hall Auditorium the first weekend in May. The dancers converged on stage from Mainstream Dance and the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre thus creating the Covington Regional Ballet.

Waffle House standoff backs up I-20

A standoff at the Waffle House on Evan's Mill Road in Lithonia had Interstate 20 backed up and area streets closed Tuesday around 3 p.m. Out of at least two suspects holed up in the Waffle House, one was apprehended and one fled to a nearby parking lot where he held a gun to his head, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
