InVest in the NCSO

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. Each Friday The Covington News will publish a list of individuals, businesses and civic groups who have donated to the cause that week as well as the total amount raised. Faithful friend

For 15 years the Newton County Animal Shelter was served by a dedicated volunteer. He passed away in September and Wednesday shelter employees and volunteers recognized his loyalty by hanging a plaque honoring him in the shelter lobby.

Crowe found guilty by judge

Christina Renee Crowe was found guilty in the death of 7-year-old Bobby Joe Couch Thursday afternoon and sentenced by Newton County Superior Court Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr. to serve at least 10 years of a 25-year prison term.

Newton County juvenile court receives grant from Promoting Safe and Stable Families program

Newton County Juvenile Court received a grant award in the amount of $36,562.50 from the Department of Human Services Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program. The court will use these funds to launch its first program targeted specifically to girls. Girl STEPS, Sisters Teaching Empowering Parenting Sisters, will help adolescent girls redirect disruptive behavior and improve family relationships. The Juvenile Court in Newton County was one of only six Georgia agencies to receive funding for new programs through the Promoting Safe and Stable Families program this year.
