Social Circle murder victim ID'd

The body found burning off Interstate 20 in Social Circle late Thursday night has been identified as 36-year-old Akili Jabari Stewart of Stone Mountain. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he was killed as a result of gunshot wounds.

Gas prices rose 5 cents last week

Average retail gasoline prices in Atlanta have risen 5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.83 per gallon yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.89 per gallon, according to gasoline price website AtlantaGasPrices.com.

Ex-husband sought in woman's assault

The ex-husband of a woman who was beaten in a hotel off City Pond Road Wednesday is being sought by authorities.

Officers from the Covington Police Department were called to the hotel and when they arrived, met with the victim who was "visibly shaken." Officers noted that her hotel room had items strewn all over the floor and the victim's eyes were bloodshot as if she had been crying.

Dead body found on fire in woods off I-20

Authorities in Social Circle are investigating a body found late Thursday night. According to Social Circle director of public safety Tom Fox, a 911 call placed at 11:44 p.m. reported seeing a fire being started in the woods off exit 101 near Interstate 20 and Ga. Hwy. 278. According to Fox, firefighters responded to the blaze and discovered a black male, possibly in his 30s.

Both the GBI and Social Circle Police Department were working the scene throughout the day Friday morning. The GBI conducted an autopsy Saturday but have yet to release the name of the victim ...

Meneguzzo named principal of Theme School at Ficquett

With the announcement of theme school principal Ruth Anne Smith's retirement, James Meneguzzo has been named principal of the Newton County Theme School at Ficquett.

Meneguzzo, currently an assistant principal at Indian Creek Middle School, will take over at the theme school the start of the next school year. The Newton County Board of Education voted unanimously at a called meeting March 29 to appoint him.

Covington YMCA gears up for 11th annual Cheerios Challenge

On Saturday, April 21 the Covington family YMCA will be hosting the 11th annual Cheerios Challenge on the square. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the 10K run. The one mile fun run will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the 5K run beginning at 9:30 a.m. All races will start and finish at the Covington Family YMCA located at 2140 Newton Drive.

Woman arrested after hiding crack pipe in pants

While patrolling, two Newton County officers observed a group of three males and one female talking loudly in the backyard of a residence that has been known for drug activity.

Both officers had made numerous arrests in and around the residence and have received complaints about the homeowner and his involvement in drug trading.
