A two vehicle accident slowed traffic late Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 278.

An Alcovy High School student has been arrested and charged with child molestation after reportedly touching and exposing himself to a 15-year-old girl at the school.

Traffic moving slowly at I-20 west, exit 93
UPDATE: The right lane of traffic on I-20 westbound at Ga. Highway 142, exit 93 (near Home Depot), in Newton County is open but traffic is still backed up. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes. All lanes were blocked earlier with a crash that resulted in three injuries, no fatalities.
NCSS may see jump in revenue
An unexpected jump in projected revenue has the Newton County School System in a more positive place fiscally for the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. However, the projected increase will still give the NCSS only three more days of operating expenses.

Substation to come to Stanton Springs
Georgia Power is negotiating to buy a 6.5-acre tract of land in Stanton Springs industrial park to build an electrical substation to provide power to Baxter and future tenants of the park.
Council seats up for election in 2013
Though there are no county, state or federal elections in 2013, all of the cities in Newton County have council seats up for election.
Railroad crossings to be paved over
Drivers will no longer have to stop at many of those pesky railroad crossing stop signs in the county as the Newton County Public Works department is paving over five of the crossings over the next several days.

‘Les Miserables’ opening
With a cast of more than 100 strong, the Oxford Youth Singers are mounting the epic musical "Les Miserables." The show runs Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19, at 7 p.m., with a Sunday matinée performance April 21 at 3 p.m. at Porter Auditorium on Newton County High School's campus.

Thornton found to be guilty on all charges
Courtney Courtmentez Thornton sat silently, his head down, as Judge Eugene Benton read the charges against him. After nearly five hours of deliberation that stretched into two days, the jury reached a verdict of guilty on each charge. Thornton shook his head slightly after each utterance of the word "guilty." Thornton, who turns 27 today, was sentenced to life in prison plus 40 years.

Newton County residents will be able to wash their cars and water their lawns Wednesday, because the state lowered Newton County's watering restrictions to Level IV c. Order elects officers
The Madison chapter #355, Order of the Eastern Star has moved to Golden Fleece Lodge #6 on the Covington square. The chapter's new meeting nights are the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments or a meal will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. before the meetings.
Porterdale balks rail resolution
Once again the Porterdale City Council did not approve a resolution that would have encouraged the Newton County Commission to purchase the rights of way of the Norfolk Southern rail lines that traverse the county.
DDS extends hours
Beginning Tuesday, June 2nd, Department of Driver Services' (DDS) Customer Service Centers (CSCs) will be changing hours of operation in an effort to provide service at more convenient hours for customers. Centers will open earlier to better distribute customer demand in the morning hours. Clubhouse window broken
Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Office were called to the clubhouse of North Woods subdivision Sunday afternoon, after a young man was reportedly seen attempting to break into the building.
