County prepares ordinances for future growth

As residential growth has come to a standstill, the Newton County Board of Commissioners decided it was time to examine and possibly strengthen several housing and development related ordinances.

At this past weekend's county retreat, Chairman Kathy Morgan proposed creating an ordinance to force developers to build amenities before they are able to sell homes.

The Oxford Lions Club is hosting its first golf tournament, "Swinging for Sight" on March 26 at the Oaks Golf Course. The entry fee of $75 for each player includes green fee, cart, lunch, beverages and prizes. There is a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on a par 3 hole. Lunch and registration begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. All of the proceeds from the event will raise funds for sight-related charities supported by the club.

Former Chamber President Kip Purvis dies

Former Newton County Chamber of Commerce President Kip Purvis died suddenly Sunday at his home from a heart attack. Kip was a member of GEDA and had been the director of the Meriwether County Development Authority for the past ten years. Kip was the President of the Covington/Newton County Chamber of Commerce in the mid-late 1990s.
