Crime Briefs - Two Charged

Covington police reported that a shoplifting investigation resulted in the arrest of two women for possession of suspected methamphetamine on Monday.

Police charged Michelle Payne, 39, of 6024 Clane Drive in Covington, and Stephanie Miranda, 26, of 629 Windy Hill Road in Monticello, with theft by shoplifting and possession of methamphetamine about 1:37 p.m. Monday at the CVS Pharmacy at 8183 U.S. Highway 278 N.E.

Fairview Estates Park groundbreaking today at 10 a.m.

After 18 months of intense debate and compromise, a public park is being built in Fairview Estates, with a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. today in the neighborhood off Fairview Road.

Several officials will speak, including Newton County Chairman Kathy Morgan, District 3 Commissioner Nancy Schulz and Scott Sirotkin, director of the county's developmental services department.

SPLOST meeting to be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Historic Courthouse

In 2011, the first time in five years, Newton County residents will vote on whether to have another special local option sales tax. However, before a ballot is formed, the Newton County Board of Commissioners must select a list of projects to put to a referendum.

Covington woman dies in wreck Sunday evening

A Covington woman died and two people were injured in a two-car collision Sunday evening on Georgia Highway 20 at Buckingham Drive.
Kayla Quinnisha Ward, 20, was killed in the wreck, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
It was raining at the time and the driver apparently lost control of the car, according to Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis. Ward died at the scene of blunt force injuries suffered in the wreck, Davis said.
According to the State Patrol:
Ward was southbound in a Honda Accord and attempted to pass another vehicle ...
