Henderson’s check not the first

Newton County Commission Chairman Keith Ellis cut fellow Commissioner J.C. Henderson a loan, or "paycheck advance," for $4,500 on Aug. 12. Henderson said he needed the money to send his son to college after financial aid promises from Tuskegee University fell through.

NCSO detention officer fired

A Newton County Sheriff's Office detention officer was arrested Thursday, Aug. 28 for inappropriate contact with a minor and, as of Friday, remained in custody at the Newton County Detention Center, according to NCSO Sgt. Cortney Morrison.

Security enhanced at courthouse for motion hearings of accused murderers

Security has been enhanced at the Newton County Judicial Center today because of motion hearings for several accused murderers. Newton County Superior Court Judge Samuel Ozburn is hearing from attorneys for Sam Dawkins, Robert Lambert, Michael West and Chad Allen. All men are accused of the late-2009 murder of Andrew Nichols. Additional law enforcement has been called in as a precaution.

Kurtz named chief assistant D.A.

Anne Kurtz has been named the chief assistant district attorney for the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, according to District Attorney Layla Zon.

Kurtz has been with the district attorney's office in Newton County since 2007. She earned a bachelor's degree in business management in 2004 from Georgia Tech and earned a law degree in 2007 from Georgia State College of Law. Kurtz worked for the Cobb County District Attorney's office during the summer of her second year of law school.
