Bear spotted south of Newborn

A large bear was spotted south of Newborn this week, and the Jasper County man who initially reported the bear says there is evidence it's hanging around, but an official with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said real concern doesn't set in until a bear starts damaging property or stops showing fear.

Getting the band together

Trombonanza! The Newton County Community Band will perform their annual spring concert on Monday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Eastside High School. Admission to the event is free. The concert is directed by T. K. Adams, and this year the community band will be joined onstage during their performance of "Trombonanza" by eighth grade trumpet players from all four middle schools. 25 years of teaching

Carol Jolly started working at Woodlee's Christian Child Care Center in 1985 where she taught 2 year-olds. For the past 12 years, she has found her niche teaching third grade at the Academy. A reception in her honor will be held at the school located at 2125 Old Salem Road in Conyers from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 24. All of her past and present students are invited to attend.

Silver anniversary of service

Lula Smith-Rachels was presented with a 25-year service plaque and a bouquet of roses by Terre Wofford, CIC sales director Fla./Ga. for Guideon Insurance, for 25 years of service with the company. Smith-Rachels has been in business on the Covington square for 56 years. In celebration of her milestone of service, Smith-Rachels, Wofford, Wayne Vaughn (Smith-Rachel's son) and Smith Insurance Agency staff members Barbara Bell and Justin Thrower enjoyed lunch at Longhorn Steak House in Covington.

Airport fuel farm to be working Monday

 The Covington Municipal Airport is nearly fully operational, but some snags remain. Atlanta East Aviation Manager Rusty Anglin said the two 10,000 gallon fuel tanks at the airport were filled Friday, but when employees tried to pump out the fuel, nothing happened.

Fore! The Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce held its annual golf tournament on an absolutely beautiful day Thursday. The Oaks hosted the event, which drew about 30 teams. Various community sponsors set up tables on each hole and gave away prizes and refreshments. The Sunbelt Builders 1A team won first place (score of 52 on the 71 par course), with Hodge Underground (55) and Miracle League/Newton County Recreation Department (56) teams coming in second and third. Denny Sellers won the most accurate drive contest and Deborah Davis won closest to the pin. For photos of Thursday's winning teams ...
