4H Forever: State 4H Congress

Newton County 4-H member Flannery Peay (on right) represented Northwest District at State 4-H Congress this week at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta. She competed in Performing Arts Instrumental, one of the largest projects in the state, and finished in fourth place. As part of the competition, Peay completed a year's portfolio work including performing arts work, leadership and service, then also arranged her own four-minute old-time fiddle piece. She was accompanied by County Extension Agent Terri Fullerton.

One tank trip: Sleeping bear, hidden alligator

Bear Hollow Zoo in Athens, Georgia has something for everyone. A short drive from Newton and Rockdale counties, this zoo offers a wide variety of wild animals. Here you can find a owls, bears, an American bald eagle and a reptile house with a variety of snakes and alligators. Volunteers educated on each of the animals are on hand to answer questions and offer a hands-on visit with some of the wildlife. The Bear Hollow Zoo is free for all visitors. Covington woman dies in wreck Sunday evening

A Covington woman died and two people were injured in a two-car collision Sunday evening on Georgia Highway 20 at Buckingham Drive.
Kayla Quinnisha Ward, 20, was killed in the wreck, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
It was raining at the time and the driver apparently lost control of the car, according to Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis. Ward died at the scene of blunt force injuries suffered in the wreck, Davis said.
According to the State Patrol:
Ward was southbound in a Honda Accord and attempted to pass another vehicle ...

Social Security hearing office opens in Covington

A Social Security hearing office recently opened in Covington, and had its grand opening today at 10 a.m. at the office, which is located on the Covington ByPass Road next to Patrick's and across from the Indian Creek Golf Course. Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue gave brief remarks at the event.

Oak Hill, Ga. 212, called ‘death trap,’ to get traffic light

A traffic light is still coming to the intersection of Oak Hill Road and Ga. Highway 212, but it might not be completed until September 2011.

On Tuesday, the Newton County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a $106,548 bid from Moye Electric of Dublin to install the traffic signal; the money comes from previously allocated federal stimulus money. Chairman Kathy Morgan said in a Thursday e-mail that the contract calls for completion prior to Oct. 1, 2011.

The menace of Cyber Bullying

When Leslie first moved to Newton County from her small Midwestern hometown, her biggest concern was leaving the friends she had grown up with. She never guessed that finding friends here would be as much heartbreak as it has turned out to be.

"I have zero friends," the 15-year-old, whose last name was withheld to protect her from further bullying, said in a telephone conversation earlier this month. "And it's not like I had these friends and we got into a fight or anything. I just have never had them here. Kids make fun of everything about me."

USDA announces surveys

Over the next two months, vegetable growers in the United States will have the opportunity to provide first-hand information on their production practices when they participate in the Vegetable Chemical Use Survey, conducted by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

"This survey will give 160 Georgia vegetable producers the opportunity to explain how they use agricultural chemicals and manage pests to produce a safe, high-quality food supply," said Doug Kleweno, director of the NASS Georgia Field Office. "The data will help support the policies and programs that protect the health ahnd safety of agriculture producers, workers and consumers alike."

DeKalb police helicopter crashes at Covington airport

A DeKalb County Police Department helicopter crashed and caught fire about 4:45 p.m. Friday at the Covington Municipal Airport.

According to Capt. Rob Christopher of the Covington Fire Department, two DeKalb County officers were working on maneuvers when the helicopter crashed. The officers sustained minor injuries and were transported to Atlanta Medical Center
