Georgia State-Newton’s Daffodil Festival coming

On Valentine's Day, Sallie Paschal, mathematics professor at the Newton Campus of Georgia State University, led an informal "daffodil walk." The walk served as a prequel to the campus' annual Daffodil Festival to be held this year on March 7 and 8. The theme this year is "Reflection and Growth."

NCSS sets the stage to address poverty in Newton County

The Newton County School System (NCSS) sponsored the first of two poverty awareness sessions Feb. 14. Anyone interested in learning more about poverty in the community, its impacts on fellow citizens and children, as well as a new community-wide initiative aimed at helping people navigate through the situation of poverty are invited to the second session at 10 -11:30 a.m., March 3 in Porter Performing Arts Center, 144 Ram Drive.

Girl’s hair pulled in Porterdale Elementary accident

On Jan. 27 an accident occurred during a physical education class at Porterdale Elementary School (PES). According to a Feb. 1 statement released by the Newton County School System (NCSS), a student's beaded braids were caught in a volleyball net when she jumped to hit the ball. When she landed, two of her braids were pulled off her head.

Work-based learning students practice professional skills

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Newton County School System's (NCSS) Work-Based Learning and Youth Apprenticeship programs held the annual Aspiring Young Professionals (AYP) Evaluation Dinner. About 200 students and 40 adult volunteer evaluators attended. The event is a mandatory learning experience for work-based learning and youth apprenticeship students.

School system announces initiative to address poverty

Speaking before community leaders Thursday, Jan. 26, Samantha Fuhrey, superintendent for the Newton County School System (NCSS), announced a new initiative aimed at better serving NCSS students impacted by poverty. Just over 70 percent of the NCSS's 19,680 students are considered economically disadvantaged.

STEM Institute receives state certification

On Wednesday, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Institute at Newton County College and Career Academy (NCCA) became the first college and career academy in Georgia to be awarded "STEM Certification" by the Georgia Department of Education (DOE). It is the 41st school and the 10th high school to receive this distinction.
