Have You Ever Thought?... What Easter Is All About?

The month of April each year is made up of an interesting mix of days. The very first day of April starts with a joke as the tradition is to try to fool someone with what today some would call "fake news." We start the month with "April Fool's Day." From that start, the mix only gets more interesting.

Have You Ever Thought… What having a home means?

For some people, having a home means owning some property. A place that is yours. For others it may mean to rent or lease but it still grows to feel like home. Home is also a place for family. Home is a place where memories are made. It is a place of security, a place to step away from the world and feel you are "home". Someone has well stated it when they said, "Home is where they have to take you in whether they want to or not."

Have You Ever Thought… Who will help us make a difference in the appearance of our community?

Someone has said that two people are responsible for litter. The one who thoughtlessly created it and the one who passes it by. Our challenge is to find out how we can make our community look better to both those visiting and those who live here. It is not enough to be careful with what one does with their own litter, but how we can help clean up the litter that others create.

Have You Ever Thought… How one good idea can open the way to even more good ideas?

Have You Ever Thought… That it is time for us in Covington to move?

Being the "Hollywood of the South" means you can be in more than one place at a time when you are in fact in Covington. Stop in front of the Welcome Center on Clark Street and you will be welcomed to Mystic Falls, Virginia as well as Sparta, Mississippi from the "Heat of the Night." Before this past Christmas you could have stopped by the filming of Dolly Parton's "Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love" and been in Sevierville, Tennessee. Monticello Street has been set in Selma, Alabama and the Court House in Hazard County, Kentucky.

Have you ever thought?... Why is tomorrow a holiday?

If you need to go to your bank tomorrow for any reason or walk down to your mailbox for a piece of mail you are expecting, you may be in for a surprise. Have You Ever Thought?... How great it would be to have more variety in shopping and eating out?

I say we have great merchants and eateries in Covington. But I would add what is needed is more variety in both areas as well as more opportunities for entertainment. The answer to these dreams will be found in both the new development, Covington Town Center as well as new places opening in other parts of our city.

Have you ever thought …

We are just a few days into December and Christmas is closing in on us. For most of us there seems to be a thousand things be done, with all the shopping, decorating and all the activities added to our calendars are already crowded. Will this year be different? Will this be the year that we sense the peace, hope, joy and love that Christmas can bring to our lives?

Have you ever thought …

By claiming to be a great-grandfather I am not talking about being an excellent grandparent but rather being a part of the next generation. You might think it makes you feel old but the truth is it makes you feel younger. It's the start of a new day, a new generation. I am writing this column this week because as of Tuesday, Linda and I are great-grandparents. Our granddaughter-in-law, Maggie Johnston, gave birth to precious, little, Tenley Ann. The proud father is Zac Johnston. Maggie Johnston is a math teacher and volleyball coach at Eastside High School and Zac ...

Have you ever thought …

There is an old saying that it is too late to close the barn door when the horse is out. So with our community we need to make sure we are ahead of any crises that may come our way. We are blessed with a great relationship between our law enforcement agencies and the community they serve. But we cannot assume that it will always stay that way. Playing on the old saying about closing the door before the horse escapes, we as a community need to make sure we build on that positive relationship between the police and the ...
