Handling the economic crisis

News commentator, author, columnist, adviser to three presidents (Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan), and one-time Presidential candidate (Reform Party, 2000), Pat Buchanan is a person of strong and often controversial views. Recently, like the ground hog, Buchanan has predicted a gray future; but, instead of six weeks of winter, Buchanan sees at least six more months of recession. In his March 3, 2009, column, titled, "Pitchfork Time," Buchanan wrote, "Markets are not infallible. But the stock market has long been a "lead indicator" of where the economy will be six months from now."

Top stories of 2008

Time Magazine has just published a collection of articles called the "The Top Ten of Everything in 2008." The lists would make good questions for a trivia pursuit game. What couple was listed first under "Top 10 Breakups" of 2008? (Madonna & Guy Ritchie) What was the first of the "Top 10 Buzzwords" of 2008? (Change) What was the number 1 in the "Top 10 Olympic Moments?" (Michael Phelps' photo finish)

Feast and famine

This is the season of feasting - and it shows. According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, most Americans gain between one and five pounds from Thanksgiving to New Years Day. This may not sound too bad, but according to the study, the holiday weight gain stays with us, accumulating over the years, so the extra weight we carry really is last year's turkey, fruitcake, divinity and fudge. Duane Alexander, M.D., said, "These findings suggest that developing ways to avoid holiday weight gain may be extremely important for preventing obesity and the diseases associated with ...

Press on

Today is the 361st day of the year. There are only five days left of 2008. As we get ready to break out the new calendars there is bound to be some retrospection, but before we get too carried away thinking about the past, let's remember a few words from the Apostle Paul.

Prince Caspian

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" was released on DVD last Tuesday, Dec. 2. This is the second volume of C. S. Lewis Narnia fantasy series to be made into a movie by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. It follows the 2005 release of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," and the next installment planned is the 2010 release of "The Voyage of the Dawn Trader."

"Prince Caspian" has already proven to be a financial success, with production costs of $220 million and gross revenues of $420 million (according to Wikapedia). I think it is a creative success ...

There was a Santa Klaus

Do you believe in Santa Klaus? I do. His actual name was Nicholas. He is also known at St. Nicholas (or St. Nick), or Nicholas of Myra. The Dutch settlers to America called him "Santer Klause." It was Nicholas' real life that gave rise to the legends of Santa Klaus.

Thanksgiving

Have you heard about Billy's new Golden Retriever? He bought one that had just come out of retrieving school, picked up his friend Bob and right away they went duck hunting. "Boom, boom," the shotguns fired, a ducks fell, and the new dog sprung into action. It ran out onto the pond and came back with the duck, running on top of the water. Billy looked at Bob for a comment, but Bob didn't say a word. They stayed at the pond all morning, each getting their limit in ducks, and every time the new dog would run ...

Intelligent Design

Would you like to watch a humorous, intelligent, thought provoking movie this weekend? "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" starring Ben Stein was just released on DVD. I saw it yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it highly. As the title suggests, the movie is about the discrimination that some scientists have received when they dared to suggest that the apparent designs and patterns in nature could be explained by an intelligent designer of nature. This theory is known by the initials ID and is anathema to the official science community.

Security

Lately I have had this sinking feeling. It comes every night at 7 p.m. when I listen to the national news - unemployment is up, the stock market is down, and I surmise that my retirement account has shrunk, again. It feels like I'm on a boat out in deep water, miles from the shore, a storm has come up, the waves are breaking over the bow, and the boat is starting to sink. Any of you feel this way too?
