Mayor proposes doubling chamber spending in 2010

To stimulate economic development, Mayor Kim Carter introduced a proposal on Monday to more than double the amount of money spent on the Chamber of Commerce to $120,000 for the next fiscal year.

For the past couple of years, the city and county have each spent $54,000 on the chamber for economic development services. But with a new chamber president search in progress, several interested parties are considering whether the next president should have a heavier focus on economic development.

Douglas to run for 4th state senate term

State Senator John Douglas (R-Social Circle) announced he will run for a fourth Senate term in the 2010 race.

Douglas represents District 17, which includes Newton County and parts of Henry, Rockdale, Spalding and Walton counties, and has been a state senator since January 2005. He said his experience, including a term in the Georgia House and on the Newton County Board of Education, make him the best candidate in 2010.

Covington swears in councilmembers

The three winners of the Nov. 3 Covington city council election were sworn in Monday night and received raucous applause from a crowded council room.

Post 3 West Councilwoman Ocie Franklin and Post 2 West Councilwoman Hawnethia Williams took the oath of office for the second time, while Post 1 East Councilman-elect Chris Smith made that promise for the first time.
