Government can’t provide without taxes

Mort Ewing and Tim Fleming, members of the Newton County Board of Commissioners, are reported to have said, that no one has asked them to raise their taxes. Maybe, but to me, that's asking the wrong question.

Durusau: AIG questions remain unanswered

The sale of 200 million shares of AIG stock by the U.S. treasury in late May was reported to have made a "small profit." There are a couple of things about that sale and the U.S. ownership stake in AIG I find puzzling.

Libraries integral to American life

Newton County Commissioners Mort Ewing and Nancy Schutz mis-spoke when referring to the library as an "entitlement."

Rule of law should always prevail

What a difference a week makes. One week, Seal Team Six invades a sovereign country, commits burglary, theft, assault, and murder upon non-resisting occupants of a home in Pakistan. A week later, Seal Team Six is concerned for their safety and the safety of their families. The rule of law should work in both cases. That no one should be subject to home invasion, assault and even murder, no matter what their crimes. We tried ...

Nurses are special people

I discovered quite by accident that this was nurses' week. One of the nurses at Riverside, a skilled nursing facility here in Covington, had on a different colored uniform, and it caught my eye. When I asked about it, that is when I found out it was nurses' week. My wife and I spend a good bit of time at Riverside visiting her mother. So we have gotten to know a number of the nurses. ...

Durusau: No taxation without transparency

The squabble between the Democrats and Republicans over taxes leaves me puzzled as to whether I am ahead or behind. There is little detail in the debate and lots of hot air, misrepresentations and outright lies.

Low standards getting lower for war

Americans do poorly on world geography questions and I am no different. Just this week, I read stories about armies from Saudi Arabia in Bahrain, violence in Dafur (part of Sudan), and the US lead no-fly zone in Libya. I had to go look for Libya on a map, which if you are curious, is just to the east of Sudan on the continent of Africa. Which made me curious, because President Obama said that ...

Durusau: The bare truth: Different party, same story

Even in a family newspaper sometimes unpleasant things must be discussed. Women and children should stop reading now.

Durusau: “No” to organ donation a last indignity

Have you ever heard of an organ donor being turned down? One who met all the conditions to be a healthy donor, whose donation could bring sight, freedom from dialysis, even life to multiple recipients? Christian Longo is one such person whose request to be an organ donor has been turned down. Longo is on death row in Oregon. He can be executed but he can't be an organ ...

Drug war?

I was puzzled by the news of a DEA raid in Atlanta last week. Not that they found drugs and drug dealers in Atlanta. Those are almost as common a peanuts and peaches in Georgia.

Durusau: Guns and Bibles

It doesn't happen very often, but every now and again I will agree with a Republican proposal.

Durusau: Want reform? Throw all the rascals out

Health care reform or rather an alleged repeal of health care reform is in the news.

Durusau: You get what you pay for

The recent snow-followed-by-ice storm was unusual for our area. What wasn't unusual was the wall-to-wall news coverage. News coverage noticed that the interstates and streets were not being cleared and that cars and large trucks were stuck on icy roads for hours on end. The reporters did ask elected officials and others why prevention and clean-up weren't faster. And they got the usual litany of responses that it was a lack ...

Time to stop underhanded ways

Do you remember your first Led Zepplin album? Their first album had a song on it, "Your Time is Gonna Come," that had the line: "Lying, cheating, hurting, that's all you seem to do." I thought of that line when Wikileaks released the "cablegate" documents. The stash of diplomatic cables shows the United States or rather its diplomats, have been lying, cheating and hurting for at least the last 40-plus years. ...
