Try the crab cakes!

I'm not a fancy eatery kind of girl. I assume I will spill or talk too loud and embarrass myself. I lean more towards burgers at the Vortex than salmon satay in pistachio oil, but Watershed on Peachtree is - I have to admit – pretty freaking amazing. It's a little fancy, but not crazy, the food is a little pricy, but not outrageous, but every button-up shirt and kitten-heeled shoe is worth it for ...

Swing into Spring

Want to know how you can tell that spring has sprung in the ATL? The Atlanta Dogwood Festival. For 77 years people have been wandering around the city, faces turned to the sun like they had forgotten what warm weather felt like, buying crafts and food served on a stick. If it was good enough for your grandparents then it's good enough for you! There's music, food, crafts, people with dogs, probably some hipster Frisbee ...

Dream a Dream in Covington

This local version of the classic musical might not have Anne Hathaway weeping on the stage of Porter Auditorium, but if the snippets I've heard sung by our local talent are any indication, they might give her a run for her money. A story of politics, struggles, love and redemption, even the dudes will dig this musical. Because what guy doesn't like stories with convicts, French Revolutionaries and strumpets? Plus there are over 100 local ...

Will smile for food

I always thought I might enjoy swimming with sharks, but alas I am not Ocean Ramsey or the Crocodile Hunter. And while the massive Georgia Aquarium doesn't offer the ability to swim with sharks for real (whale sharks don't count), they do let you hang out with the dolphins, which is probably just as cool – or more so, considering dolphins are said to be friendly. These will totally be your friend, because in the ...

Gardening: Not just for girls and old women

My love of flowers is pretty well-known. It's my one real nod to femininity. In fact, I had an orchid in my house that I loved like a child. It recently died and I nearly shed a tear. Not kidding. It's interesting that I love flowers so much when I have such a black thumb. If I plant it, it usually dies. Maybe because I just want it to bloom and look pretty without requiring me to do boring things like give it water. Greedy, needy plants.

Check out that body!

A little creepy but a lot amazing – Bodies the Exhibition is some of the coolest stuff you'll ever see. It's like science class meets serial killer - skinned bodies, with all the systems on display. It sounds awful at first, but it's amazing and it makes science seem more like art or vice versa. Want to see how the circulatory system works? Check! How about the digestive or reproductive systems? Check, check! They've got ...

Master your weekend

My knowledge of golf is limited. I have played miniature golf, which I am no longer allowed to play because of a temper tantrum I threw once. I know more about the Tiger Woods' meltdown, when his wife went off on his cheating behind, than I do about the traditions of what some consider the world's greatest game.

Jimbo's rocks the river

If you think Jimbo's is just about burgers and chicken fingers you would be wrong. They have those, of course, along with a plethora of other tasty food and drinks, but they also have live music with local talent (like Gannon Adams later this month!), open mic nights and karaoke. And if you show them some love, they might add trivia to the mix soon! Not only can you support a local business and local talent, but you can get your entertainment close to home.

It ain’t easy bein’ sleazy

Grab your friends or your boo and head out to Blind Willie's Friday for music by Delta Moon, a little Cajun food and some drinks. Use it as a chance to get a little dressed up if you want, or you can always dress down. A joint that has the motto "It ain't easy bein' sleazy" isn't going to mind if you wear jeans. It's like a little bit of the Bayou in the middle ...

Local libations

Take a drive to Conyers and have a beer and some bar food at the Celtic Tavern this weekend. It's a small space, but it's not the size that matters. At least not here. There's a decently stocked bar, some adorable patio seating - which is great this time of year, and the small setting comes off more as intimate and not cramped. Intimate in a good way, not in a creepy I-want-to-wear-your-feet sort of ...

Crime Briefs: That’s just the way she shops

Two Covington women were charged with shoplifting from the Salvation Army Tuesday afternoon. Employees of the store watched as two women, later identified as Josephine Gilley Jones and Stephanie Lynn Harris, allegedly removed several pieces of clothing and concealed them in a white purse. When officers questioned the women initially, they both said there were no clothes inside the zipped up white purse. But when they were separated, the story changed. Harris reportedly told officers ...

E-SPLOST can make our schools better

My mother always tells me people should avoid two topics: religion and politics. While I'm typically not a rule-follower per se, I agree with her on this. However, I'm going to break that rule right now and say that while most people like to pontificate on the "liberal media," I am pretty conservative about a lot of things – especially when it comes to my money.

Pittman: Put me in coach!

I was talking to a co-worker a couple of weeks ago and made the comment that I basically had two full-time jobs, working at The News and as a full-time mommy. That was before I decided to be super smart and stretch myself even thinner by signing my 4-year-old son up for Wee Ball.
