Naked woman threatens to kill officers

A call for help to the Covington Police ended in a woman being arrested after she threatened to kill officers early Thursday morning.

Officers were called to a home on Johnson Drive, and as they pulled up, they noticed a man and woman struggling in a upstairs bedroom through the open window.

SIU nets 3 in separate drug busts

Newton County Special Investigation Unit conducted three major busts in February, removing marijuana and cocaine dealers off the streets of Newton County.

On Feb. 11, investigators from the SIU arrested 42-year-old Tommy Lee Smith, known around Newborn as Superman. After requests from several of the Newton County Commissioners, who had received complaints from their constituents of drug activity in the area, investigators began looking closely at Smith, who lives in the area of The Settlement on Valley Street.

911 center call volume up

Newton County has continued to experience growth, but the amount of calls for assistance to Covington/Newton County 911 went up only slightly in 2008 according to numbers released in their annual report.

Calls for service passed the 100,000 mark but calls for assistance increased by only .55 percent in 2008. The total calls generated by Covington Police were 27,209, Georgia State Patrol generated 93, Animal Control generated 899, Newton County Sheriff's Office generated 58,077, Oxford Police generated 1,731 and Porterdale Police generated 4,437 calls.

An Alaskan man was arrested on various sexual charges after reportedly chatting with a Newton County Sheriff's Office investigator that he believed was a 13-year-old girl.

Theme school principal chosen

The Newton County Board of Education announced recently that Dr. Jill Adams has been chosen as principal of the new middle school theme school which is scheduled to open in the 2009/2010 school year at the current site of Clements Middle School.

Mooner, drunk driver arrested

Newton County residents who happened to be at the area of U.S. Highway 278 and Turner Lake Road Thursday might have noticed an unusual sight - a full moon at around 5 p.m. when two women were driving around, one of them hanging her rear out of the window to moon those passing by.

Sheriff announces his new command staff

Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown has formally announced his command staff which will help the citizens identify those people at the NCSO whom they can go to should they need assistance in any specific area. It will also allow the new sheriff to have a group of people he can rely on to carry things through.

Teen killed in single-car accident identified

 A sixth grade student killed in a car crash last weekend was identified by Georgia State Patrol as 13-year-old Caschona Nequail Robinson, a student at Veterans Memorial Middle School.

Known as "Sweetie Pie" by those close to her, she was killed in a single car accident just before noon Saturday. According to GSP Sgt. John Cronin, Caschona was in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Malibu driven by her 18-year-old brother.

The house on High Point Falls Drive was Retha and Richard Garner's pride and joy. They built the home in February of 1979 and 30 years later, a tornado ripped through the neighborhood, shattering the sanctuary they had found in their home and sending a tree crashing into the second story.

Deed service targets area

A letter circulating around Newton County offering to obtain property deeds for homeowners has many residents confused and a little worried about their ability to obtain the deeds themselves, but they needn't be, according to Linda Hays, Newton County clerk of superior courts.
