Tax-free weekend details

Newton County residents will be able to stretch their wallets a little further this weekend, as Georgia will have its first tax-free holiday since 2009 this Friday and Saturday, according to Associated Press reports.

An army of supporters stood in long lines Wednesday at the Covington Chick-fil-A using their orders of chicken and fries to defend the restaurant chain.

Phone scam targets disabled

Newton County resident Wanita Dodd had been waiting to hear about her disability settlement when she received a phone call from a man who appeared to want to help her.

The man, who said he was from U.S. Department of Health Services, convinced her that she qualified for a $7,000 grant. What made the call more alarming to Dodd was that the caller already knew her personal information.

Officials approve public safety split

Social Circle Council members approved the splitting of the Department of Public Safety into two divisions-police and fire- at Tuesday night's meeting.

The separation would eliminate Tom Fox's position as director of public safety and leave the police and fire departments to have their own individual chiefs.

First responders simulate disaster

The multi-vehicle accident left many blood-covered victims scattered along Hwy 278 outside of Newton County Tuesday. Some were nursing shattered bones and cuts while others stumbled around, confused and moaning for help. The skilled first responders who arrived on scene only had an allotted amount time to take care of the injured and the shipment of radioactive waste that was involved in the wreck.

Get out and go

Spring might be my favorite season. After a ceaseless winter with gray skies and not a hint of green in sight, colorful flowers begin to make their appearance forecasting warmer weather ahead.

And although our spring came early this year and our winter wasn't very cool, it still is a sense of excitement for me. Now, I can hang the jacket in the closet, roll out of bed in the mornings without worrying about the cold hardwood floor touching my feet and toss the layers of clothing to the side.

Local church group to give away scholarship

Covington residents Ralph and Gerri Murphy were surprised recently when the Sunday school class they teach created a scholarship in their honor.

"Murphy's Gang," a couple's class at the First Baptist Church in Covington, will award one deserving graduating senior this year with an undisclosed amount of money to help the student in college.
