Newton County's unemployment rate decreased from 10.6 percent in July to 10 percent in August, according to preliminary figures recently released by the Georgia Department of Labor. This number is down from August of 2011 when the unemployment rate was 11.8.
Residents gathered in the downtown area Thursday afternoon to mingle and enjoy their lunch hour listening to free music from the Sans Abri Band during the first September Luncheon Concert on the square.
Although outside doesn't feel like Christmas just yet, the Arts Association of Newton County is getting into the holiday spirit early by announcing public auditions for its annual Nutcracker ballet.
The group is asking all curious residents to give the ballet slipper a try and come to Mainstream Dance in Covington Saturday, Sept. 8. Auditions for children ages five and six are from noon to 12:30 p.m., ages seven and up, auditions are from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Although the annual Mister and Miss Covington Pageant is only in its third year, but it's already becoming a staple event in Newton County as the pageant continues to draw in more contestants each year.
