Little Dawg: A band of artists

On a night when the news calls for storms and meteorologists issue area-wide tornado watches, I found David Clemens and the rest of the DC3 sitting on the upstairs patio at Jimbo's in Porterdale. The band was having a round of Pabst Blue Ribbon - the standard beer of choice in the music industry from what I've been told. Clemens hovered over a basket of fresh onion rings and he was quick to introduce the ...

Covington through the camera: Ann Wildmon

Editor's note: We're kicking off a new photo series today, courtesy of our photographer about town, Darrell Everidge. He'll be taking photos of local people wherever he finds them, at the park, in shops or strolling through their neighborhoods. His goal is to capture all the slices of life that make up Covington. So if you see him around, wave and chat him up for a minute.

Holt: A view from the House

Last week, we crossed the halfway mark for the legislative session. The pace is really picking up, with the second half promising to be very intense. The House voted on 22 bills and resolutions during the week. Most were fairly minor issues or housekeeping measures, though we did pass two bills to restructure MARTA, which were obviously significant for folks inside the perimeter.

A view from the Georgia House

The House again saw only a handful of bills during our third week, but that situation won't last long, since the committees have begun to pump out a steady stream of new legislation. Our main work was getting out the "little budget," as the bill to adjust the current, fiscal year 2013 budget is called. This bill makes adjustments to reflect the actual rate at which revenue is coming in, and is also used to ...

Training calves is a lot of work

Eastside High School FFA is proud of our Livestock Show Team members. We are fortunate to have some of the top livestock competitors in the state of Georgia. Livestock showing is what most people think about when they think FFA. While it is true there are many students who show livestock, there is more to it than what you see on the surface.

Chung inspired by Obama

Last month, President Barack Obama addressed the nation in his second inaugural speech and said, "America's possibilities are limitless." It was not just American citizens who were listening to him; but his words resonated with the rest of the world as well. People of different backgrounds, cultures, and countries all tuned in to see what President Obama had to say about the next four years. One of those spectators that day was Oxford College sophomore Won Chung.

A local view from the Georgia House

During the second week of the legislative session, the House began moving a bit faster as the first few bills came out of the committee system. We voted on three measures on the House floor, the most important of which by far was SB 24, the "Hospital Medicaid Financing Program Act," also known derisively as the "bed tax." This tax, which was first passed three years ago, will reach the end of its authorization in ...
