Ozburn nominated to Georgia Supreme Court

Alcovy Circuit Superior Court Judge Samuel D. Ozburn was nominated by State Sen. John Douglas to the Georgia Judicial Nominating Commission to fill the vacancy left by Chief Justice Leah Sears of the Georgia Supreme Court when she retires effective June 30. If Governor Sonny Perdue accepts the nomination, Judge Ozburn would become Associate Justice of the court.

Rotary fundraiser features Grizzard performer

Fans of the late, beloved Southern humorist Lewis Grizzard will have a chance to celebrate the columnist's life and work at the first ever "Remembering Lewis Grizzard: In His Own Words" festival on March 14 and 15 at the Blue Willow Inn and Social Circle Theater.

Arson suspected in Wed. mobile home fire

Investigators suspect a fire that consumed a single family mobile home in the northern tip of the county Wednesday morning was intentionally set, according to the Newton County Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived at 547 Ellington Road around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a call from a passer-by, the structure was already fully engulfed in flames, said NCFD Deputy Chief Tim Smith.

Train derails in Social Circle

A train derailed in Social Circle Monday evening after a section of rail broke off, according to the Social Circle Department of Public Safety.

About seven cars, some filled with plastic pellets and the rest empty, derailed under the East Hightower Trail bridge about 7 p.m., breaking a city water line in the process, according to SCDPS Chief Steve Shelton.

Teen charged with arson

A Covington teen was arrested and charged with arson after a fire broke out Christmas Eve in a Project Adventure house on Spring Street, causing the evacuation of all the home's residents to another facility.

Firefighters received the call of a residential structure fire about 8 p.m. Dec. 24. The fire, which started in an unoccupied bedroom, was put out by the sprinkler system.
