A few of the 50 teen and pre-teen age young ladies participating in the Chastity Ball dropped by the Ivy Vine to be fitted for their gowns on Friday. The day-long event, held April 18 at the A.P. Henderson Community Center in Social Circle, includes workshops emphasizing abstinence, classes on etiquette, sessions with an adult mentor and a tea for younger girls. The night will be capped off with a ball, where each girl will be presented and escorted by a male relative.
Reaching for the sky: Members of the Social Circle Boys and Girls Club participate in stretching and cardio exercises during the PeachCare for Kids Day and Health Fair on Friday. Participants included PeachCare, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Amerigroup, which paid the SCBGC membership fee for those enrolled in Amerigroup, the Social Circle Ace Hardware store and the Wal-Mart of Covington, which provided free vision screenings. The downtown revitalization project steering committee kicked off its first meeting by listening to professional planners' assessment for Social Circle's downtown area and adding a few ideas of their own.
At least one local juvenile was identified as the alleged culprit behind an incidence of graffiti discovered March 4 in the Windsong subdivision in Social Circle, according to School Resource Officer and Gang Investigator Jason Stribling of the Social Circle Public Safety Department.
The juvenile, a 16-year-old male from Social Circle, admitted to the incident when taken into custody, and he was released that same morning, said Stribling. The teen faces juvenile charges of damage to property and the commission of gang activity. Stribling is investigating allegations of another teen possibly being involved.
Libraries have been more than just a place to borrow books for quite some time. For many in the community, the library fills a role that other institutions no longer provide: educational resources and programs for children, free books, DVDs, and CDs for entertainment, a place for meetings and exams, and a place to study.
The Youth Exposure Club of Social Circle held a performance, "Remembering Our Past and Shaping Our Future," capping off Black History Month at the Social Circle Theater on Feb. 27. Students recited speeches and performed as iconic figures in black history, from inventor and educator Dr. George Washington Carver to Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut. Outside, exhibitors displayed educational materials.
A tractor trailer and a garbage truck crashed into each other on a rainy afternoon Friday on Ga. Highway 11 near the Newton County/Social Circle border, sending both drivers to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
