Children’s catch of the day

The Metro Atlanta Hawg Hunter Bass Club presents the 13th Annual Casting Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Georgia State Fishery off U.S. Highway 278 in Social Circle from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During the event, kids will be involved in a variety of activities. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the children will participate in a fishing contest, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be a casting contest and lunch will be provided and served from noon. to 1 p.m.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. prizes and awards will be given to all contest winners of the day. Newton County Sheriff's Department Officer and Hawg Hunters member Darrell Anders, who is highly involved in the fishing derby and volunteers each year for the event, recommends that all children bring and wear hats.

"It is always very hot and the kids need to wear hats and plenty of sunscreen," Anders said.

This fishing derby is catch and release only; no fish caught during the event will be harvested.

Kids planning on participating in the fishing derby do not have to bring fishing supplies. Everything from fishing rods to bait is provided for the children.

For more information on the fishing derby and where to pick up a release form, contact Anthony Shy at (770) 262-4905 or any other Metro Club member.
