Remembering Mr. Carl

This week we lost another one of the true pioneers of our community. Carl Smith Jr. "Mr. Carl," as he was respectfully called by his many friends, passed away Monday at the age of 96.

Mr. Carl was a kind, honest man who was one of those family men and community activists who molded the very character of Newton County.

He built a business that is still thriving today as Newton Electric, and he served as a member of the Covington City Council for 25 years. He also found time to raise a family, be president of our local Kiwanis Club, president of the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce and Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 1806.

For his civic efforts he was awarded the coveted R.O. Arnold Award.

Mr. Carl was a pillar of leadership not only for his community, but for his church family at Covington First United Methodist.

It is a testimony to his competitive spirit that at age 93 he achieved a hole in one, an accomplishment that most of us who enjoy golf will only dream of achieving.

Mr. Carl was married to the ever-beautiful Ms. Lorene for 75 years; if you ever would have asked him, he would have told you that she was his greatest friend and joy of his life.

We are thankful here in Newton County for the life works of Carl Smith Jr. Because of those efforts we have inherited a great place to live.
