Carl Smith Jr., born August 8, 1912 in Covington, Ga., died at home on Monday July 13, 2009. He was the son of the late Carl Smith Sr. and Minnie Mobley. He was predeceased in death by brothers: Simms, Dan, "Peaches", and Charlie and one sister, Evelyn Hooten.


He was the true American Dream, starting a small appliance repair shop at his home on Floyd Street in the garage. That dream grew into a thriving business known as Covington Electric and was a staple on the square for 25 years. Moving beyond that, with the help of his son, and later, grandson Chris, Newton Electric was founded with a branch in McDonough, Georgia. It has served customers for 43 years.

"Mr. Carl", as he was lovingly known, served on the city council of Covington and for 25 years, 1978-2003 served on the board of First National Bank of Newton County (now known as Bank of North Georgia). He was Exaulted Ruler of B.P.O.E. Lodge 1806; President of Covington Kawanis Club; Newton County Chamber of Commerce President; Received the R.O.Arnold Community Service Award; was a Shriner and Worshipful Master of the Masonic Golden Fleece Lodge #6. He was a longtime faithful member of Covington First United Methodist Church where he was always smiling and greeting friends from "His Pew". He was Trustee Chairman and President of the Men's Bible Class. An avid golfer, he achieved a hole-in-one at age 93. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Lorene, son and daughter-in-law Billy and Irene, granddaughter Fleeta Smith-Baggett, grandson and his wife Chris and Gidget, great granddaughters Madelyn Alexander Smith-Baggett, Ashley Nichole and Kristi Rene Smith.


Funeral services for Mr. Carl will be held on Wednesday July 15th, at 11:00 AM from Covington First United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Gilreath, Dr. Don Martin and Dr. Royesse Stowe officiating. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Covington.
