Casola family out of hospital

The victims of last Tuesday's hit and run have been released from their respective hospitals, according to the media liaisons at Grady and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Stephanie Casola suffered a broken foot, a laceration on her right side and severe road rash, 4 year old Jacob Casola suffered from broken bones, and Isaac Casola, age 3, had a punctured lung and a tear in his liver, which doctors reportedly said would heal without surgery.

Casola's pregnant sister Anita King, who was visiting from North Carolina, was initially treated and released from the hospital but was readmitted after her two-year old daughter Avery succumbed to her injuries. According to witnesses, Avery was drug underneath the car several times. She was admitted to the hospital with severe bleeding and swelling of the brain.

According to Covington Police, 46 year old Lanny Perry Barnes is th eperson responsible for the tragedy. At around 12:45 p.m. on May 23, Barnes allegedly repeatedly slammed his Honda Accord into the family, who were leaving a local McDonald's. Witnesses say that Barnes was smiling and laughing during the incident.

Ficquett Elementary students and staff immediately rallied around the Casola family, whose 9 year old daughter Haley is a fourth grade student at the school. Students began contributing ice cream money and change from home the Thursday before the last day of school, and in two days raised $560 for the family

"Kids never cease to amaze me with their depth and caring," said Ficquett Principal Beverly Copland. "I am so proud we were able to raise that much money for the family."

Copeland said that many families who came to the school for graduation ceremonies last week were happy to be able to help in some way and donated money to the family was well.

According to Covington Chief of Police Stacey Cotton, Barnes is still not cooperating with the officers and they still are unclear why this incident happened. There is no indication that the victims and Barnes knew each other.

"Everybody is shocked and dismayed that this could happen in a great town like Covington," Cotton said last week. "It has hurt the community deeply but we are a resilient community. People don't just sit by and watch this happen - they got out they are tried to help."

In addition to the five counts of aggravated battery Barnes was initially charged with, more charges have been added. He is also charged with four counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony murder and one count of malice murder.

Because of this incident, there are many financial demands that will be experienced by both the Casola and King families. Donations for the Casola and King family can be made at Passion Community Church or any Main Street Bank. McDonald's on 278 are taking donations, as is Mayfield Hardware.

According to Passion's Lay Minister Chad Caldwell, this incident has not shaken his faith, but has made it stronger.

"People understand that the world is evil and God never said we wouldn't be affected," he said. "But he did say that we would get through it and it will only make us stronger."
