A city in mourning

The youngest victim of Tuesday's attack at a local McDonald's succumbed to her injuries Wednesday afternoon. For a community still coming to grips with the tragic attack of two mothers and their three young children, this was almost too much to bear.

A pile of stuffed animals grows outside the restaurant where the incident took place, and the flag has been lowered to half-mast in honor of the victims. Meanwhile, 46 years old Lanny Perry Barnes sits in the Newton County Detention Center, bond denied pending a mental health evaluation, as charges against him continue to rise.

Covington Police have released more information about the seemingly random act of violence. According to Chief Stacy Cotton, there is no longer a question of intention.

"He pulled into the parking place and gunned it," Cotton said. "He then drove back and forth multiple times."

Witnesses say that 2 year old Avery Nicole King was trapped under the vehicle and drug several times during the attack. She suffered severe swelling and bleeding around the brain. Her mother, Anita King, was treated and released. Witnesses have also said the Barnes was smiling and laughing throughout the incident.

Stephanie Casola suffered a broken foot, a laceration on her right side and extensive road rash, her son Jacob 4, suffered from broken bones while 3 years old Isaac has a punctured lung and a tear in his liver.

Paul Casola, the father of the two boys still in the hospital held a news conference Wednesday afternoon, announcing the death of his niece.

"I regret to inform you, that the brutal attempt to take innocent life has succeeded. And at 3:50 p.m. at the tender age of 2 years old, Avery Nicole King went to be with Jesus."

The child's mother Anita King, who had been treated and released from the hospital, was readmitted Wednesday. She is in the early stages of pregnancy.

At Passion Community Church, which the Casola's founded, a prayer vigil was held Wednesday morning. Members of the community came in droves - all still shocked by what occurred

"It's devastating," said Shirly Hall. "To think they just went out to get some lunch and this happens."

Neighbor Tonya Huffman said that her two children had attended Isaac's birthday party just days before the incident took place.

"Their faith is so amazing," she said. "They are good caring people who love to serve the community. They definitely practice what they preach."

In fact, the Casola's could often be found on the Square during functions, passing out cotton candy and popcorn. And when the 48th Brigade was deployed, they served the solider's family's lunch on the Square.

According to Passion's Lay Minister Chad Caldwell, this incident has not shaken the faith, but has made it stronger.

"People understand that the world is evil and God never said we wouldn't be affected," he said. "But he did say that we would get through it and it will only make us stronger. Right now we have no hatred towards him [Barnes], just confusion as to why he did what he did. This is all just surreal."

According to the Covington Police, Barnes is still not cooperating and they have no idea why this incident occurred. They have no indication that the victims and Barnes knew one another.

"Everybody is shocked and dismayed that this could happened in a great town like Covington," Cotton said. "It has hurt the community deeply but we are a resilient community. Peopled didn't just sit by and watch this happen - they got out they tried to help."

According to Cotton, one witness to the attack chased Barnes's vehicle as he fled the scent, being hit himself. Many people inside the restaurant came outside and tried to shield the victims as best as possible from Barnes tirade.

One McDonald's employee grabbed one of the little boys - though Cotton is not sure which one - and drove him to the emergency room at Newton Medical Center, possibly saving his life.

"The citizens and employees all acted heroically." Cotton said. "Don't judge us on the suspect, but on the community."

A preliminary hearing for Barnes has been scheduled for June 7. It is unclear if the mental health evaluation will be complete at that time.

In addition to the five counts of aggravated battery Barnes was initially charged with, more charges have been added. He is also charged with four counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony murder and one count of malice murder.

Because of this incident, there are many financial demands that will be experienced by both the Casola and King families. Donations for the Casola and King family can be made at Passion Community Church or any Main Street Bank.
