How precious our blessings

"My God! How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!"
- Thomas Jefferson

This Saturday is a precious and joyous day of the year.

It is a day set aside to honor the accomplishments of past leaders, past heroes, past common folks like us, who helped found this country that continues in spite of disagreements to be the beacon of hope for the whole world.

You don't have to go far to celebrate this country's rich heritage; you can load your family up in the faithful family car and head over to the charming little town of Oxford to catch their community parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Stay after the parade to enjoy watermelon and popcorn and see whom Mayor Jerry Roseberry will name as the Oxford citizen of the year.

After your visit to Oxford, you can take a short drive over to Social Circle, where there will be a car show, a pet show and horse and buggy rides. At 5 p.m. there will be another great hometown parade; this parade will end up on the Social Circle High School football field where a gospel group will perform. The grand finale will be a fireworks display - the first for Social Circle.

If you would like to visit another one of our great local hometowns, the quaint mill village of Porterdale will be providing live music, food and moonwalks for the kids beginning at 5 p.m. After dark, a fireworks extravaganza paid for by donations from the good citizens and business people of Newton County will light up the night sky.

It is only appropriate that we celebrate this grand day with our families and our friends.

We are fortunate to live in a community where patriotism is still celebrated on a grand scale.

In your celebrations, please do not drink too many toasts because the local police will be doing their patriotic duty also, and we would hate for you to spend this grand evening behind bars.

God bless our communities and God bless America.
