Investigators from the Newton County Sheriff's Office solved two burglaries at once when they arrested two men for an armed robbery Wednesday.

At around 11 p.m. Wednesday night the Citgo gas station on Ga. Highway 81 was allegedly robbed by two black men carrying handguns. The suspects ran from the store and left the scene in a black SUV, driven by a third man. Witnesses immediately called 911 and deputies converged on the area and were able to locate the SUV at the intersection of Brown Bridge and Salem roads.

According to 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, NCSO deputies were able to take the driver into custody, but the other two suspects fled from the vehicle. After a brief chase, one of them was apprehended in the parking lot of the Publix grocery store. The third person was able to escape, and is still on the loose as of press time. Both weapons used in the robbery were found, as well as the currency taken from the Citgo.

Deputies arrested 28-year-old Renarda Jermal Smith of Decatur, who was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault, and 43-year-old Rodney Shadarron Harris of Morrow, who was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Investigators were also able to tie Harris to an additional armed robbery that occurred on May 29 at the BP gas station on Salem Road, solving that case as well.

Investigators are asking that anyone with information on the third suspect that fled to contact the NCSO at (678) 625-1400 or to leave a tip online at www.newtonsheriffga.org. Informants can remain anonymous.
