Buy Local: Ozone Bar and Grill

/

Full house: Crowds pack the Ozone Bar and Grill for one its many concerts. Country singer Craig Campbell will be performing at the Ozone on Saturday, May 23.

Located in an old skating rink, the Ozone Bar and Grill is a unique place in Covington to hear live music and enjoy a variety of food. The rink has been converted into a concert hall, with a spacious downstairs and a wrap-around upstairs balcony.

Owner Roy Mote said the building’s space is what sets it apart.

"There are other places in town you can go, but I despise going somewhere where you’re shoulder to shoulder with someone and you can’t move; you can’t scratch your nose without bumping into someone," Mote said.

The live musical entertainment and dance floor are also key features and Mote said Ozone is a place where people can sit down, eat and relax, whether they want to dance on the first floor or people watch on the second.

He said the there are enough waitresses so that residents don’t have to go to the bar if they don’t want to, and the bathrooms are large so lines are not a problem.

Mote said he tries to mix up the live entertainment and DJ music including county, hip-hop and rock music. He said county bands are among the most popular, including cover bands and original artists such as David Allan Coe and Tracy Lawrence. Cover charges are usually in the $5 to $10 range during nights with bands, but during the summer there is more dancing and less live music so there’s no cover charge during most days.

Mote allows people over the age of 18 to enter Ozone, but they can’t drink unless they’re 21 and Mote said he’s adamant about no underage drinking.

During the week Ozone has the normal bar activities including billiards, darts and karaoke. Ozone also has a full kitchen where patrons can order anything from hot wings to a steak dinner. One of Mote’s personal favorites is the steak wrap, which has same quality steak as the steak platter, but in wrap form.

Upcoming bands include the LoCash Cowboys, country rock, on Friday, May 29, at 9 p.m. and Blizzard of Ozzy, a Ozzy Osbourne Tribute band, and Back in Black, an AC/DC tribute band on Saturday, May 30, at 9 p.m.
