Suspect arrested after local man shot in both of his legs

The man who deputies say shot a local man in both legs on March 29 has been arrested and charged with a myriad of things, including armed robbery.

According to Newton County Sheriff’s Department PIO Tyrone Oliver, deputies were called out to Summerset Apartments around 6:30 p.m. in reference to a person shot. When the deputies arrived they reportedly found a man on the ground who appeared to have a broken leg.

The victim allegedly told deputies that he had noticed two black males walking toward him from an adjoining neighborhood. The men reportedly confronted him and told him to give them what he had in his pockets. According to reports, the victim told the two men he didn’t have anything, then began running from the area in an attempt to get away from the would-be robbers.

He told deputies that as he was running, he heard two shots and then fell down onto some rocks. When he looked up he allegedly saw the two men running away in the Lakeside Drive area.

Oliver said that it is unclear if the bullets that struck the man in each leg caused the break in his leg or if the fall did it; either way, the broken leg is a result of the shooting.

Two days later, 23-year-old Sean Michael Haughton was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of arms by a convicted felon and first offender probation, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, commission of a crime by convicted felony through use of a firearm, armed robbery and theft by receiving stolen property.
