Screaming man arrested, charged with public drunkeness

Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home late Monday night when a resident called about a man screaming outside her home on Ga. Highway 36.

According to reports, the caller told dispatchers that an intoxicated man was in front of her house crying and "acting delirious." She reportedly told them he began biting his cell phone and screaming.

When deputies arrived, they allegedly located the screaming man, identified as 31-year-old Rodney Lee McCullers, lying in a stream of water in a ditch. According to reports, McCullers was covered in mud and completely wet. While speaking with him, deputies reportedly noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from him, his eyes appeared to be bloodshot and glassy and his speech was allegedly slurred.

Deputies allege McCullers was unable to stand up and had to be helped out of the ditch. While walking him to a patrol car, deputies asked him if he knew where he was and he reportedly told them he had no idea but that he was trying to walk to his home in Oxford.

McCullers’ license was suspended, according to dispatchers, for DUI second offense and he had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear/public drunk. He was placed into a patrol car and deputies retrieved his coat and hat from the complainant’s yard. He was then transported to the Newton County Detention Center where he was charged with public intoxication.
