Cable employee imposter scams family

Woman stole cable boxes, computer modem

A woman on Emerson Trail reported that a woman from Charter Cable had arrived at her home Saturday and picked up cable boxes and a modem from her children, but when she called the company, she found out that Charter did not have a person by that name working for them.

According to reports from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the home and the woman told them that when she arrived home her two sons told her that a woman identifying herself as Sophia Jones, an employee of Charter Cable, had stopped by their home and taken four cable boxes and a computer modem and left the boys with a invoice of removal.

Thinking the situation odd, the woman contacted Charter and questioned them about their employee, and they reportedly told her they had not issued a work order and had no one by that name employed at their company and advised her to contact the NCSO.

According to the complainant, the woman who called herself Sophia Jones is described as a black female, roughly 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds. The woman was light-skinned and possibly in her mid-30s, according to reports, with shoulder-length black hair. She was wearing a light blue nurse’s uniform with a white nametag and had a juvenile male with her. She was driving a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo with factory wheels.

According to NCSO PIO 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, they have not heard of incidents like this one happening recently, but warn citizens that if the situation seems suspicious, to err on the side of caution.

"Do not hesitate to ask for identification or to call the company and verify they have sent someone to your home," he said. "If you feel really uncomfortable, call us – it’s what we are here for."

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the NCSO at (678) 625-1400 or online at www.sheriff.co.newton.ga.us. Tips can remain anonymous.
