Crews work to clear a wreck on Ga. Highway 11, about a mile north of Interstate 20, that occured when a garbage truck was rear-ended by a tractor trailer around 1:40 p.m. Friday.

A tractor trailer and a garbage truck crashed into each other on a rainy afternoon Friday on Ga. Highway 11 near the Newton County/Social Circle border, sending both drivers to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The garbage truck was heading south on Ga. Highway 11 and reportedly tried to turn into a drive way around 1:40 p.m., according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Scott Edmonson. The tractor trailer truck following behind was unable to slow down in time and hit the garbage truck, shearing off a portion of the front of the tractor trailer. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch to the side of the road. No other vehicles were reportedly involved.

The drivers, a 48-year-old man from Georgia and a 56-year-old man from South Carolina, were taken to a hospital in Athens. The tractor trailer was reportedly carrying cardboard products, according to Newton County Fire Department Battalion Chief Terry Davenport.

About 40 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled in the accident, and crew members from the Emergency Management Association were at the scene cleaning up the spill.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for a few hours on Ga. Highway 11 as public safety agencies and towing crews worked to clear the wreck.
