William Travis Aiken

Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home

            Mr. William Travis Aiken, 76, of Athens and formerly of Lyons, died Feb. 23. The son of the late Dr. William White Aiken and Allie Louise Travis, he was born in DeKalb County. He was a lifelong resident of Lyons and was very proud of his civic services for the city. He was mayor of Lyons for 10 years and a member of the Lyons Jaycees, the Lyons Lions Club and the First Methodist Church of Lyons and was on the board of directors for peoples Bank of Lyons for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Emory University at Oxford and attended Emory University, Atlanta, where he was a member of Chi-Phi Fraternity. His parents were from the Covington area related to the Travis and Aiken families of Newton County. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Family gatherings in Daytona Beach, Fla., were always special to him and his family.

            Surviving are wife of 50 years Bernita Stanbery Aiken; son William Stanbery Aiken of Lawrenceville; daughter and son-in-law Etta Louise and James William Morrissey of Fayetteville; son and daughter-in-law Robert Travis and Roxann Campbell Aiken III of Covington; Son Andrew Henley Aiken of Bogart; grandchildren William Michael Morrissey, Anthony James Morrissey, Travis Campbell Aiken, Matthew Aiken Morrissey, Robert White Aiken.

            Funeral services were held Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home. Interment followed at Covington City Cemetery.
