Oxford College to cut jobs

Oxford College of Emory University announced that it will cut five full-time and four part-time staff members as well as four temporary or vacant positions in light of the tough financial climate.

According to Dean Stephen Bowen, in the planning of the school’s FY10 budget administrators took advice from the president of Emory University James Wagner and pledged to "maintain a long-term focus and make decisions that may be painful in the short term but will continue to build for Oxford’s future" They are also planning on preserving core programs along with core faculty and staff.

"Oxford is a community in which we are committed to the individuals who make up the whole as well as the institution itself. Although we cannot afford to be a static community in a dynamic world, when changes in personnel are made, they will be carefully considered in terms of both programs and persons," read a letter to the faculty and staff from Bowen.

The dean declined to specify which positions were being eliminated, allowing the individuals affected by the cuts to "tell their coworkers and others in their own way and on their own schedule"
