FUNERAL NOTICE FROM: Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home Richard Ammons, of Covington, died peacefully at his home, February 10, 2009, at the age of 89. Born on May 16, 1919, in Greensboro, GA, he was the second of three sons born to Frank and Ida Dolvins Ammons. His earlier schooling took place in Atlanta public schools where he attended David T. Howard School and Booker T. Washington High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Richard and Catherine Meredithe Thaniel met in Brooklyn, NY, and were married on September 3, 1949 and shortly thereafter, moved back to Atlanta where he enrolled at Morehouse College. At Morehouse, Richard majored in psychology, joined Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and participated in a number of productions of the Atlanta Morehouse-Spelman Players. Upon graduation, he began working for Phillip Morris Corporation, where he became one of the company’s first African-American salesmen in the South. In 1965, Richard was promoted and transferred to the company’s headquarters in New York City, to assume more general marketing responsibilities. He became an early member of the American Society of Market Developers. Richard retired from Phillip Morris in 1977 and began working for the New York City Fire Department, managing its equipment storehouse. He retired from the department in 1989. Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Catherine; son and his wife Richard Allen Ammons and Noel James; granddaughter, Moriah Catherine Ammons; daughter and her husband, Teresa and Terrence Sherod; cousins, Jeremiah and Gwendolyn Armour, Marcine and Sylvester Hall, Sara Dane, Noel and Lois Reid, Odessa and Clifford Franklin, Brenda Baugh, Richard Baugh; sister-in-law and her husband, Alma and James Parrish; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Richard will be held Saturday, February 14, 11:00 AM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, Covington. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan, Friday, February 13, from 6-8 PM.
