Milwood concert raises $2K in scholarships

Two Porterdale students attending the Newton County Career Academy will each receive $1,000 for their education beyond high school, thanks to the joint efforts of CARE, Shane Millwood, Josh Millwood, Li’l Bit Country Band, and the Lundsford Family.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered at the newly renovated open air Porterdale Gym for a night of music and dancing at a donated concert Saturday. The Lundsfords, a family group of four singers and musicians, opened the show at 7 p.m. for the Chastain-style gathering and set the tone for a fun and energetic evening.

Millwood, a former Porterdale resident, explained to the audience that he and his brother wanted to support the efforts of Porterdale’s educationally-minded youth. Shane, Josh and the five-member band played and sang their hearts out while they played a fully-donated three-hour concert.

With ticket sales reaching $1,700, and a donation from We Ride To Provide, the audience enthusiastically participated in 50/50 drawings to reach the final goal of $2,000. C.A.R.E. thanks the Lundsfords, Shane and Josh Millwood, the Li’l Bit Country Band, We Ride To Provide, and all attendees for helping two Porterdale students with furthering their education.

Scholarships will be awarded during the 2014-2015 school year to one or more high school seniors residing in Porterdale and who attend the NCCA. Eligible students are those planning to further their education beyond high school.

Scholarship applications will be reviewed by members of CARE and awarded based on a combination of GPA, essay, and interviews. Specifics about the scholarship will be distributed to students through the administration at NCCA during the school year.

For the past four years, CARE has actively provided “a hand-up” to Porterdale’s residents. Some of their projects include the annual coat give-away, annual school supplies give-away, planting rose bushes at Rose Hill with donations from Keep Newton Clean and Beautiful, providing free house paint with donations from Valspar, and miscellaneous assistance to the elderly.
