Hey “Hollywood of the South” fans. Here comes another one.

A new ABC Studios TV series called “Red Band Society” will be filming at the old Newton High School Sept. 2-5 after the Newton County Board of Education approved the application for use of school facilities and Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey’s recommendation Tuesday night at its monthly meeting.

“The school system supports this use of facilities agreement and is working diligently with ABC Studios to plan this endeavor around school/system activities,” Fuhrey wrote to board members.

The show, executive produced by Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Television, looks into the lives of a group of teenagers living in Los Angeles’ Ocean Park Hospital with varying types of illnesses and disorders. According to Fox’s website, it’s a “provocative, unconventional and unique coming-of-age dramedy about a group of rule-bending friends and the adults who mentor them through the ups and down of adolescence … Exploring everything from strong friendships, and first loves, to humorous mishaps and heartbreaks, the series is a story of life, with an edgy comedic tone all its own.”

Octavia Spencer, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in “The Help” (2011), stars as Nurse Jackson, a “caregiver with a take-no-prisoners approach” who “puts her own life second.” Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters” and “666 Park Avenue”) also stars as the “hot doc” and country’s top pediatric surgeon.

“Red Band Society” deals with a range of reasons that may cause teenagers to become hospital in-patients, from cystic fibrosis to eating disorders to comas.

The gym in the unused Newton High School will transform into a homecoming dance scene, according to the use of facilities application.

Brad Smith, location manager for ABC Studios submitted the application August 18. A negotiated agreement to a base rate of $5,000 to be paid to the school system was signed on August 19.
