Indian Creek student drowns in Albany pool

A local middle school student drowned last week in Albany, Georgia, at a neighborhood pool.

Zyhir Johnson, 13, who attended Indian Creek Middle School, was with his uncle from Atlanta on June 19. According to the Albany Herald, the Albany Fire Department responded to a call for a water rescue at about 6:15 p.m.

The story reported the fire department stated someone saw the incident happening from across the street, whose nephew went to the bottom of the 10-foot pool to get the boy out. Efforts to save him were ultimately unsuccessful.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler identified the victim as Johnson, and the story showed Dougherty EMS and the Albany Police Department responded to the scene.

“This is definitely a sad event for the school,” said Sherri Davis-Viniard, NCSS director of public relations. “We know his friends and the teachers at Indian Creek will miss him.”

“Because some may have difficulty dealing with this tragic event, the school will definitely make counselors available to anyone who needs assistance. We offer our sincerest condolences to the Johnson family during this very difficult time.”
