Atlanta Streetcar delayed; won't begin this summer

ATLANTA (AP) — City officials say Atlanta's new streetcar system will not begin operations this summer as planned. They now say it won't start rolling until November.

Atlanta Streetcar Director Tim Borchers said it could take up to four more months to prepare the system, if no other delays arise.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1rg3Y73) that Borchers made the comments at a Tuesday Atlanta City Council committee meeting. He said the system still requires several layers of testing and approvals from state and federal authorities and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

The Atlanta newspaper reports that cost overruns and schedule delays have beset the $100 million Atlanta Streetcar, a 2.7-mile loop from Centennial Olympic Park to the King Center, since it broke ground in February 2012.
