Covington girl to be featured on radio during cancer research fundraiser

A Covington girl will be on the radio as part of an upcoming fundraiser for the Aflac Cancer Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Elise Robinson plans to take part in the 14th annual Care-A-Thon, a 37-hour radio fundraiser from July 31-August 1 on 95.5 FM and AM 750 News/Talk WSB. Listeners will have the opportunity to send in donations to help patients with cancer or blood disorders. Nine-year-old Elise is one of those patients.

One Saturday, Elise complained of a headache. Her mother, Karlene Robinson, gave her Tylenol, but Elise woke up on Sunday with another headache. That did not sit right with Robinson, so she took her daughter to the emergency room. Elise was transported to the oncology team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta after a CT scan and a blood test showed abnormal results.

Elise was diagnosed with leukemia. She is currently receiving treatment at the Aflac Cancer Center.

She is one of 15-20 patients who will be featured on air, where her story will be broadcast to listeners, in between guest stars such as Freddie Freeman, Matt Ryan, Herman Cain and Clark Howard.

“It’s like they’re a little celebrity for the day,” said Sophie Frankham-Smith, public relations intern with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

All of the featured patients are treated at the Aflac Cancer Center, according to Frankham-Smith. Most of the children are around Elise’s age.

There will be a call-in center where volunteers take phone calls. Listeners can donate over the phone or online through social media. Frankham-Smith said the Care-A-Thon raised about $1.5 million last year for the center, which Frankham-Smith said cares for more in-patients than any other pediatric cancer center in the country.

“That money is put to very good use,” Frankham-Smith said.

Special events will happen throughout the 37 hours, such as a power hour during which any donation will be matched.
