Train derails in Social Circle

/

Crews remove the derailed cars on Wednesday.

A train derailed in Social Circle Monday evening after a section of rail broke off, according to the Social Circle Department of Public Safety.

About seven cars, some filled with plastic pellets and the rest empty, derailed under the East Hightower Trail bridge about 7 p.m., breaking a city water line in the process, according to SCDPS Chief Steve Shelton.

No one was injured in the mishap and investigators do not suspect intentional damage, said Shelton. Utilities crews were able to shut the broken water line off quickly, but a new tap had to be run to at least one house.

A section of the metal track was apparently weakened from wear and tear and broke off onto its side, causing the cars, which were being pushed to the Great Walton line, to derail.

It reportedly took a moment before engineers realized the cars were off the track because the high bank sides propped up the cars.

Crews were on the scene moving the cars off the broken track Wednesday.

Shelton estimated about 10 to 20 trains pass on the rail a day and the speed limit within the city limits is 25 miles an hour.

"It's been a while since they had a derailment," he said. "Every once in a while they have a car that jumps the track."
