NCSO conducting internal investigation

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation after it was discovered an individual was being held at the Newton County Detention Center following an erroneous arrest in another jurisdiction.

According to an NCSO press release, a warrant application was submitted by the Department of Labor to Newton County Magistrate Court on Oct. 10, 2013 and a warrant was issued on Nov. 6, 2013 for the arrest of Pamela D. Jones. The arrest warrant was for Violation of Ga Unemployment Law (O.C.G.A. 34-8-256 – penalties for false representation or fraudulent claims). The arrest warrant did not include identification information.

Through a series of errors, the personal identification information of Pamela D. Jones was not properly entered into Georgia Crime Information Center (G.C.I.C.). An individual was arrested in another jurisdiction on a traffic stop and transferred to Newton County Detention Center shortly after.

The person is no longer incarcerated after NCSO discovered the errors Tuesday evening after being contacted by the media.

No more investigation is available at this time, due to the investigation still being on going.

“We take any allegations seriously,” NCSO deputy Cortney Morrison said. “We’re doing an internal investigation to look at any errors in procedures and policies.
