Runoff voting starts Monday

In-person early voting for the July 22 primary runoff is set to begin Monday, June 30 and will continue through Friday, July 18. There are several key races still up in the air, and the winners of this runoff move on to the general election in November.

Where and when can you vote early?

Newton County Administration Building, 1113 Usher Street, Covington
June 30-July 3: Mon-Thurs 8 a.m.-5 p.m
July 7-11: Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
July 14-18: Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

What do I need to bring?
Any registered Georgia voter can vote early. When going to cast your ballot, make sure you bring photo identification, which can be a Georgia driver’s license, a state-issued voter ID card, a valid U.S. passport or a valid U.S. military ID card.

The candidates
Democrat race:
- District 4 County Commissioner: J.C. Henderson (incumbent) fell nine votes short of a majority in May, and Sonya Hunte secured the second runoff spot with 397 votes and 30.78 percent of the vote
Republican races:
- U.S. Senate: Former congressman Jack Kingston and former Dollar General CEO David Perdue
- District 10 U.S. House: Jody Hice, a radio show host and pastor, and Mike Collins, a trucking business owner
- District 112 State House: Dave Belton, a pilot and Morgan County School Board member, and Aaron Brooks, a corporate salesman and co-founder of a local conservative group

Voters participating in the May primary had to vote within one party, regardless of political affiliation. However, those voters must now vote in that same party’s upcoming runoff. Registered voters who did not vote in the May primary can choose to vote in either party’s July runoff.
