Newton still improving

The Newton High School Rams hold court at UGA where they went 3-0 during their stay. The Rams will wrap up their schedule of summer league games Saturday at Mercer University.

The summer is young and so is the Newton High School Rams basketball team, but the Rams are still getting better having won seven of their last eight games to put them at 15-7.

The Rams went 6-1 at the University of Georgia and Clayton State last weekend with wins against Chestatee, Henry County, Parkview, Arabia Mountain, Academy and Creekside. The Rams recorded their first victory at Mercer University yesterday against Griffin High School in a 53-49 win.

Friday at Clayton State

Newton vs. Parkview. Win 49-35.
Marvin Boireau: 14 points (five of six), five rebounds.
Joshua Tukes: Six points (three of four), four rebounds.

Newton vs. B.E.S.T Academy. Win 71-37.
Antonio Smith: 27 points (12 of 14), 20 rebounds.
Dante Johnson: 10 points (four of five), seven rebounds.

Newton vs. Arabia Mountain. Loss 38-40.
Donovan Grubb: 14 points (five of nine), 11 rebounds.

Newton vs. Arabia Mountain. Win 46-33.
Antonio Smith: 14 points (four of seven), 11 rebounds.
Malik Wilson: 15 points (five of eight), five rebounds.

Saturday at UGA

Newton vs. Chestatee. Win 57-45.
Darvin Jones: 19 pts (seven of nine), five assists, two steals.
Jaquan Simms: Nine points (four of four), three assists, three steals.

Newton vs. Henry County. Win 54-36.
Donovan Grubb: 16 points (five of seven) 10 rebounds.
Darvin Jones: 10 points (four of six) four assists.

Newton vs. Creekside. Win 53-31.
Jaquan Simms: 15 points (four of seven), three assists, two steals.
Donovan Grubb: 10 points (four of seven), five rebounds, two steals.

Head coach Rick Rasmussen said that the team is improving.

“We have had our share of learning experiences, but we have also learned to bounce back. Which is crucial to building momentum for next season,” Rasmussen said in a text.

Newton will finish up their summer league play with weekend games at Mercer ending on Saturday.
