Porterdale man charged with DUI

Officers with the Covington Police Department and Porterdale Police Department arrested a Porterdale man after he plowed into two cars Sunday and kept driving.

According to the incident report, the Porterdale officer saw Franklin, who was traveling on Turner Lake Road, cross the double yellow line, hit two on-coming vehicles, and then continue driving. The Porterdale officer was able to pull the car over.

When the Covington officer, who assisted with the arrest, asked Franklin if he had been drinking, the driver said he had one beer.

Franklin agreed to take a breathalyzer tests, but when transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center where the test is administered, he refused to cooperate with the operator and failed to provide sufficient breath samples.

Franklin was charged with DUI, failing to stop at an accident and failure to maintain lanes.

DUI suspect runs truck off the road
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's Office arrested a Covington man Jan. 1 for DUI after his truck was found in a ditch along Crowell Road.

According to the incident report, Anthony Stinson was traveling north on Crowell Road when he lost control of his vehicle and drove into the ditch. When deputies questioned Stinson, they noted an alcohol odor on his breath. He told deputies he had been drinking.

Deputies did not conduct sobriety tests at the scene of the accident because Stinson had visible injuries, including a large cut on his forehead.

Stinson was transported to Newton Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries, and transported from the hospital to the Newton County jail.

He was charged with a DUI, driving with a suspended license and failure to maintain lane.
