Newton to host summer b-ball camp

/

The Newton High School Lady Rams won their first regional title in 10 years this past season. Head coach Tiffani Johnson led her team to its first undefeated season in region play in over 30 years by going 12-0.

Still months away from the beginning of the regular season, Newton High School seems to have adopted the mantra “basketball never stops.”

Newton will host a girl’s summer basketball camp grades 6-12 for $60. The fee includes a snack/meal but participants are welcome to bring their own food. Participants will be divided by age and ability in order to allow them to compete at a high level against the appropriate competition.

The Lady Ram staff will lead the way for the camp, which includes head coach Tiffani Johnson, assistant coach Chris Ray, assistant coach Lavon White and assistant coach Takeita Bell. Some current and former varsity players will also help teach.

The camp will focus on ball handling, shooting, passing and defense.

“You can’t do much in basketball if you can’t dribble,” Lady Rams’ head coach Tiffani Johnson.

Johnson wants to instill the tangibles and intangibles of basketball to anyone who attends. She plans to teach dribbling and shooting along with many other nuances of the game. Some intangibles she plans to instill in the particpants are hard work and teamwork.

“Whatever your skill level is, we’re going to take you to the next level,” Johnson said.

Johnson said that although she’d prefer players to come the entire week, she was open to players coming on a daily basis, but noted that it would cost $15 per day.

This camp gives Johnson the opportunity to vet upcoming student athletes as well as give them a chance to learn new things. For some it can be learning the basics of basketball, for others it can be refining their skills and learning to play at a varsity level.

“It’s also an opportunity to get people to come to the games,” Johnson said. The camps brings awareness to what she and her team are doing at Newton and will hopefully increase attendance at games.

Johnson led her team in what was a historically great season for them. The Lady Rams finished 22-6, their third 20-win season in a row. They also went 12-0 in the region, a feat that hadn’t been done at Newton in over 30 years. This led to the Lady Rams winning their first region title in 10 years.
