Former area teacher of year arrested

Georgia’s 2014 Biotechnology Teacher of the Year, according to Georgia Bio, was arrested for cruelty to children May 12.

Julie Johnson, the Social Circle High School 2012-13 teacher of the year, was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with an investigation the Department of Family and Children Services.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Jeff Alexander said deputies, assisting the Department of Family and Children Services, went to Johnson’s home May 8 on a court order to remove her two children.

On that date, John Johnson, the children’s grandfather was arrested for obstruction, according to Alexander.

Deputies went back to the home May 12 and arrested Julie Johnson.

According to Social Circle Public Schools Superintendent Todd McGhee, Johnson turned in a letter of resignation May 9. She began working at Social Circle High July 2005.
